"The Valley Hydro workshop and Test site in the heart of Cornwall England are probably unique.
Power has been produced on this site for centuries, waterwheels for milling, tin smelting and mining operations followed by numerous turbines for the china clay industry. The last historic turbine to work here was the 1902 pelton which has now been removed to an industrial museum.
Two water sources provide our power. One has a gross head of 30 mtrs and is coupled to a small spiral cased Francis turbine. The other has a head of 12mtrs and supplies water to a valley crossflow turbine which powers our workshop .Excess electricity is diverted automatically to a nearby cottage.
Our test site is equipped with a calibrated digital read out "Kent Taylor Magmaster "flowmeter and a prony type brake tester allowing us to test any turbine up to 200 ltrs/ sec and a head of up to 30 mtrs. We can arrange for customers to view their own turbine under test if it falls within these parameters.
We take great pride in the fact that the Micro hydro and Pico hydro range of turbines we produce are built using our own source of renewable energy generated by a valley crossflow turbine. Associated items such as screens, sluice gates etc can also be designed, built and if required fitted by the company. General engineering repairs to items such as waterwheels, pumps and other turbines are also possible. ... " more
